The Young Movie Icon turned Producer
– Jodi Sta. Maria is an award-winning, box-office actress and filmmaker. In her debut as a producer for her first-feature length film, the MMFF nominee The Boy Foretold by The Stars, she brings in two decades’ worth of experience and insight as an actress in film and television. Starting out with the teen-oriented series like Gimik and very successful Tabing Ilog which ran for five years, she proceeded to build a career in TV and film that span different multi-faceted characters, as well as hosting stints here and there. She starred alongside Vilma Santos and Claudine Barretto in Anak, which was acclaimed by local and international critics alike, as well as Bagong Buwan, which won multiple awards in the 2001 Metro Manila Film Festival.
Her work in both TV and the big screen will go down to be marked with popular success, with her taking roles in more primetime series in TV in the following years. These include Darating ang Umaga, Kampanerang Kuba, Walang Kapalit, Tayong Dalawa, and Noah, as well as lead roles in the drama anthology Maalala mo Kaya. Continuing with her work in 100 Days to Heaven, she rose into greater recognition with the uber-successful hit Be Careful With My Heart, which has been aired in Vietnam and Malaysia, as well as other parts of Asia, Africa, and South America, as well as earned her a Best Drama Actress Nomination in the 2013 PMPC Star Awards for Television. In 2015, she landed one of the most iconic roles in Philippine television as she starred as Amor de Jesus in the remake of the 2000 hit telenovela Pangako Sa’Yo, earning her a Best Performance by an Actress (TV Series) award from the 2016 Gawad Tanglaw Awards, as well as a Best Actress Nomination from the International Emmy Awards.
In the big screen, she has made her mark with roles in popular blockbusters You Are the One, Cinco, Maria Leonora Teresa, All You Need is Pag-ibig. She also received several awards and nominations for her performances in independent films, such as nominations for Best Actress from the PMPC Star Awards for Movies and Golden Screen Awards for Sisa and from 35th Gawad Urian Awards for Chassis, as well as winning Best Supporting Actress in the Cinema One Originals Film Festival for Third World Happy. In the following years, she earned more recognition for her work in Migrante, earning her Best Actress Nominations from the PMPC Star Awards for Movies, Golden Screen Awards, and FAMAS Awards; as well as from the 37th Gawad Urian Awards for her portrayal of the lead role in Aparisyon. The film, which was one of the entries in the New Breed Category of the 2012 Cinemalaya International Film Festival, received more accolades and was screened in different film festivals in France (Deauville Film Festival), the United States (Hawaii International Film Festival), and South Korea (Busan International Film Festival).
In the recent years, her return to mainstream film and television has done nothing but underscore her achievements in the past years. She was nominated Best Actress in the 2015 Metro Manila Film Festival for All You Need is Pag-ibig, Movie Actress of the Year in the 34th PMPC Star Awards for Movies for Dear Other Self, and Best Drama Actress in both the 32nd and 33rd PMPC Star Awards for Television for Sana Dalawa ang Puso and Sino ang Maysala? respectively. She has taken more complex and daring roles in her more recent work in Man and Wife and Second Coming. Her latest film, Clarita, was not only a hit in local cinemas but also competed as part of the official selections in international film festivals (2019 Fantasporto International Film Festival in Portugal and the Mirabile Dictu International Film Festival in the Vatican City).
