The Clever Mind behind Clever Minds
Derick Cabrido is an award-winning director and producer, boasting a filmography spanning multiple genres and themes. He started out by creating documentaries, rising to prominence as he was awarded with the Bronze World Medal at the 2009 New York Television Festival for “Pinays for Export,” Silver Screen Award at the 2010 New York International Independent Film and Video Festival for the “Tasaday,” and the 2012 Silver World Medal Award at the New York Festivals for “Yaman sa Basura,” which was also a finalist for the 2011 UNICEF Asia-Pacific Child Rights Awards.
His venture to narrative filmmaking was also marked by success, starting off with his role as producer and cinematographer for the short film Antipo, which premiered at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. He was also a producer for the film Cuchera, a finalist at the 2011 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. The film premiered at under the Discovery Section of the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival; Main Competition, 2011 Stockholm International Film Festival; Official Selection, 2011 Belgrade International Film Festival; and Official Selection, 2011 Cleveland Film Festival. He also produced the film Nuwebe (Termitaria), a finalist at the 2013 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival which won awards from the Queens World Film Festival and Harlem International Film Festival in New York City, Lume International Film Festival in Brazil, Festival Internacional de Cine Puebla in Mexico and Best Director at the 2015 ASEAN International Film Festival and Awards in Sarawak, Malaysia.
His directorial debut with the feature-length film Children’s Show earned the awards of Best Editing, Best Sound Design, Canon Best Cinematography, and Best Supporting Actor at 2014 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival; as well as Special Jury Prize for the Orient Express Category at Fantasporto International Film Festival in Portugal; and Special Jury Award, Best Screenplay, and Emerging Director Award at the Fantastic Cinema Festival in Arkansas, Texas. He also won the Best Story Award at the 15th Gawad Tanglaw Awards, Outstanding Achievement-Development Communication Category of the 9th Hildegarde Awards, and Emerging Filmmaker Award at Film Society of Little Rock, Arkansas, Texas.
Because of the accolades and distinctions Derick has earned in his outings, Derick was tapped by the Philippines’ largest film outfit – ABS-CBN Films/ Star Cinema – to helm and produce, via Clever Minds, Inc., the breakthrough film Clarita, which earned him Best Director in the 2019 Fantasporto International Film Festival and the 2019 Mirabile Dictu International Film Festival.
His latest directorial feature is Star Cinema/ ABS-CBN Films and Clever Minds, Inc.’s U-Turn, starring Kim Chiu, JM de Guzman, and Tony Labrusca, which launched Star Cinema’s impressive foray into straight to platform production.
